The United States is reportedly preparing for potential military action in Cuba.
According to CBS News, an internal Army message says the U.S. Army Reserve is examining what resources it can provide to the military’s Southern Command over the next four months.
While Cuba is not mentioned in the message, CBS News reports that, according to multiple U.S. officials, the request is aimed at Cuba.
The U.S. Army Reserve is examining whether it can provide the military’s Southern Command with police forces, medical personnel and other support units within the next four months, according to an internal Army message reviewed by CBS News.
Though the message makes no reference to Cuba, the request is for continued military planning aimed at Cuba, according to multiple U.S. officials who spoke to CBS News under condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
There is no indication in the document that any units have received deployment orders. But the planning comes as the Trump administration puts intense economic pressure on Cuba and urges the island nation to make political reforms.
The message does not identify how many troops would be needed in the Southern Command’s region, which covers Central and South America, including the Caribbean. It also does not specify where the forces could be sent or what operation they would support.
Trump confirmed that he was seeking “a fundamental change in the situation in Cuba.”
He also said Secretary of State Marco Rubio was “deep into negotiations with Cuba.”
Trump added, “Let’s see what happens. We will not allow a haven for foreign adversaries to threaten America on our own doorstep, right at our doorstep.”
President Donald Trump said his administration is seeking “a fundamental change in the situation in Cuba,” which he described as “an absolutely failed state” that “will fall” during a speech Tuesday at a United Nations gathering of world leaders in New York.
Trump said Cuba is “under great pressure, the biggest pressure they’ve ever been under,” and is “failing,” in a speech to dignitaries attending the high-level week of the UN General Assembly. He said Secretary of State Marco Rubio was handling negotiations with Havana.
“He’s deep into negotiations with Cuba. Let’s see what happens. We will not allow a haven for foreign adversaries to threaten America on our own doorstep, right at our doorstep,” he said. Cuban diplomats present at the assembly then walked out of the room.
