President Donald Trump announced that the last American forces are leaving Iraq, declaring the departure a “Great Day for America” and saying the United States is bringing its military presence in the country to an end.
In a post, Trump described the U.S. involvement in Iraq as a “long time” marked by “very bad decision-making” and called the military presence an “expensive excursion into Hell.” He said the withdrawal would soon become part of history.
Trump credited his administration with ending Operation Inherent Resolve in 2026, describing the departure as a victory for the United States and Iraq and a “decisive victory” over ISIS. He said the group had been “completely decimated” by his administration during his first term, along with other threats.
The president said the withdrawal from Erbil Air Base was an orderly departure of coalition forces and equipment. He contrasted the move with the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, saying that military equipment had been left behind there and referring to the 13 U.S. service members who died.
“I set a clear mission, gave our Commanders the tools to finish it, and refused to let a temporary presence become a permanent one,” Trump wrote. He said he had the choice to remain in Iraq or leave and concluded that “it was time for America to go home.”
Trump also praised Iraq’s new prime minister, Ali al-Zaidi, saying he had supported and endorsed him from the beginning. Trump claimed al-Zaidi won an election he was not expected to win “in a landslide” and expressed hope that the new prime minister would be able to manage the country effectively.
Trump said the U.S. mission in Iraq had been to fight a caliphate and argued that, with the caliphate gone, American forces could return home.
“We came to fight a caliphate. There is no longer a caliphate. We are going home!” Trump wrote.
Today, I am pleased to announce, that the last American Forces are leaving Iraq! It has been a long time, with very bad decision-making that got us involved in this quagmire in the first place, but soon, that will be part of History. This is a Great Day for America and, importantly, we leave with Iraq having a wonderful new Prime Minister, Ali al-Zaidi, somebody I supported from the beginning and fully endorsed. He won an Election that he was not expected to win, and did so, in a landslide!
Launched in 2003 under the presidency of George W. Bush, and continued under the Administration of Barack Hussein Obama in 2014, and Sleepy Joe Biden, Operation Inherent Resolve ends in 2026 under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump. This Day is a victory for the United States, a victory for Iraq, and a decisive victory over ISIS, which has been completely decimated by the Trump Administration, First Term, along with other very bad and dangerous players. Unlike Afghanistan, where much Military Equipment and everything else was left behind, and 13 Warriors lie dead, with many badly wounded, this orderly departure of Coalition forces and equipment from Erbil Air Base marks the end of a very expensive excursion into Hell. I set a clear mission, gave our Commanders the tools to finish it, and refused to let a temporary presence become a permanent one. I had a choice to stay or to leave, and felt, without question, that it was time for America to go home! Prime Minister al-Zaidi, is outstanding, and he will hopefully be able to handle things very well. We came to fight a caliphate. There is no longer a caliphate. We are going home! President DONALD J. TRUMP
Troops were sent back into Iraq to fight the war against ISIS.
Chief Pentagon Spokesman said, “This milestone reflects the success of a 12-year campaign that defeated ISIS as an organized military threat in Iraq and across the region…It also marks a transition from a wartime coalition mission to an Iraqi-led security effort supported by a more normal bilateral security relationship.”
The U.S. military completed its “orderly withdrawal” of troops from Iraq on Wednesday, after a 12-year presence prompted by the war against ISIS, the militant Islamic State group, U.S. Central Command said Wednesday.
“This milestone reflects the success of a 12-year campaign that defeated ISIS as an organized military threat in Iraq and across the region,” Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement. “It also marks a transition from a wartime coalition mission to an Iraqi-led security effort supported by a more normal bilateral security relationship.”
Wednesday’s completion marks the second time that the U.S. has withdrawn all of its military forces from Iraq. In 2011 the U.S. pulled out after an 8-year presence that began with the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.
Trump is keeping his promises!
