Republican Rep. David Valadao lost his re-election bid.
He lost to Democrat candidate Randy Villegas.
He was the last remaining Republican in Congress to vote to impeach Donald Trump.
Republican Rep. David Valadao of California lost his reelection bid on Wednesday to Democrat Randy Villegas, a progressive political newcomer.
Villegas won with 66.4% of the vote in the state’s 22nd District as of Thursday morning, with 57% of the votes counted, according to the Associated Press.
Valadao was the final Republican still serving in Congress who voted to impeach President Donald Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021 protests in the nation’s capital. Some of the 10 who voted for impeachment retired, while others, such as Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, were defeated by challengers who had Trump’s backing, the Washington Examiner reported.
Zero Republicans who voted to impeach Donald Trump will be in the next Congress.
8 of the 10 lost or didn’t run for re-election back in 2022.
Valadao and Newhouse were among the 10 House Republicans who crossed the aisle to impeach Trump following the Capitol attack. Former GOP Reps. Liz Cheney (Wyo.) and Adam Kinzinger (Ill.) were the only two to serve on the House Select Committee on Jan. 6, which infuriated Republicans and drew Trump’s ire.
In 2022, eight of the 10 either chose to not run for reelection or lost in the GOP primaries, including Cheney who lost to Trump-backed Rep. Harriet Hageman (R-Wyo.). At the time, Trump had endorsed a number of candidates in GOP primary battles in an effort to unseat Republicans who he believed crossed him following the 2020 election and Capitol attack.
